The Ethical Barometer

No-Drama Derek; Just Results

He gets there on time. He plays. He hits. Derek Jeter broke Lou Gehrig’s record for hits in October 2009. The Barometer was reminded of this little-noted event because in the year of the Tiger and McGwire admissions there was some missed magic to behold in Jeter’s achievement. Jeter broke Gehrig’s record with a single, just a single. But, he did so without steroids, shadowy figures, and the sloppiness of character that has ridden shotgun with the power-hitters. Mr. Jeter’s steady-as-he-goes career is a bedtime story with a moral for children everywhere: suit up, show up, stay cleaned up, and swing! Before you know it, some 2,722 hits later, you will be in the record books – no asterisk required. Character matters. Character achieves – and a darn good lasting achievement at that.
